Corruption & Mutations

How the Stygian Depths change those who linger too long.

Corruption and Mutations

The depths change those who linger too long.

Corruption Triggers

You might gain a mutation when:

  • You spend a month without seeing the sun
  • You’re reduced to 0 HP
  • You consume certain substances (corrupted food, strange fungi, cannibal feast)
  • You experience specific trauma (long fall in darkness, exposure to void)
  • You learn languages of alien entities
  • You abandon wealth for survival
  • You try to convince others to embrace darkness (Rapture)
  • The GM decides the situation warrants it

Mutation Effects

Mutations can be:

  • Beneficial: Extra senses, natural weapons, damage resistance
  • Detrimental: Physical deformities, mental instability, chronic pain
  • Some can be removed with powerful magic
  • Others are permanent
  • Accumulating too many can change you fundamentally

Managing Mutations

  • Some can be removed with powerful magic
  • Others are permanent
  • Accumulating too many can change you fundamentally
  • This is optional in some campaigns – discuss with your GM
